As first tipped in this article on ProFootballTalk.com, the United Football League held its inaugural draft last night. As of this writing it's unclear of the order of the picks, but it's interesting to see who went where. Michael Vick was not drafted, and it seems that the UFL only had players involved in the draft process who showed some sort of interest in playing in the league this fall.

Below are a list of the players who were drafted, along with their date of birth, where they attended college, and where (if at all) they were selected in the NFL Draft. Players are listed in alphabetical order by last name. The player listings came directly from the league's official list of the UFL's first-ever draft; the rest of the data came via tedious internet searches. Odds are that I made a mistake or two in here; if you find any errors, please let me know.

Summary: Paul Gause didn't play football in college, instead opting for basketball at Seton Hall. Archuleta and Bryant are former NFL first-round picks hoping to find a future in professional football. Butler ran into trouble with the law with marijuana, but he is a fantastic athlete and is the type of player who could use the UFL to have another shot to prove himself as being a professional-level football player.

Stills, the oldest player to be selected by any team in this draft, was an NFL Pro Bowler in 2003 while with the Kansas City Chiefs. Toal was the Big East rookie of the year in 2004, but injuries caused him to miss out on landing a spot in the NFL... but the UFL could prove to be a place for him to show if he can perform effectively on a professional level.

Summary: The UFL New York franchise drafted only one player who was once an NFL draft pick, former LSU RB LaBrandon Toefield, and this franchise seems to be leaning more toward younger players. With Toefield and Sapp, the team has two experienced RBs to go with some up-and-coming running backs. Clebert bench-pressed 225 pounds an astonishing 43 times in December 2007 while at USF, which makes him an interesting prospect at nose tackle. Johnson, who played very well at Utah, could be a rather intriguing signal-caller for the team.

-Undrafted in the 2007 NFL Draft

Summary: Orlando has an impressive lineup with a wide selection of players who were once highly touted NFL prospects. Doss, Bollinger, Tribble, and Perry all have superstar ability, and there was a time not too long ago when Tribble looked like he would end up as a day one pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Also, it's encouraging to see Rien Long making a pro football comeback. Earlier this year, the former Outland Trophy winner suffered severe injuries in a wreck in Nashville not too far from an area that I've been known to frequent from time to time.

There is a drastic difference in the draft approach that can be seen between the UFL New York franchise and the UFL Orlando franchise. It will be quite interesting to see how the respective strategies work out both in the short term and in the long term.

-Undrafted in the 2008 NFL Draft

Summary: The presence of Gunn on the list is interesting considering that he was arrested on three counts of selling crack cocaine in Alabama earlier this year. Brackins has the potential to be a breakout star for the UFL, with his freakish athletic ability giving him the chance to stand out above the rest of the UFL wide receivers. Underwood was an NFL-quality free safety (playing in all 16 regular-season games with the Packers in 2005) before he tore two ligaments in his right knee in August 2006. If he can somehow regain his old form, he could have a major impact on the team's defense.
