Subject : Marcus Spears
Dear Lou
You Must be living in some kind of dream land if you think Mr. Spears will still be on the board at the 19th selection. If the Chargers do not take a wide receiver with their 12th pick they will more then likely select a defensive lineman with Marcus Spears being near the top of their list.
By the way if you turn out to be right I will E-mail you with a sincere apology.
Lou: The latest mock I have has Spears going at #25, so I must really be in a dreamland. Realistically, Spears could go as high as #7, so don't allow my mock to throw your opinion of him.
What I personally think will hurt Spears is his 40 time, 5.1. Look at the other top DE prospects, and you're looking at guys in the 4.6-4.8 range. Spears isn't a speed guy per se, but he is better than most other DEs at stopping the run.
Spears is the type of player who would fit very well into a 3-4 defense, and he could be converted to a DT if the right team took him. Cleveland is going 3-4, but I think they want a DE who will be a QB chaser. For Washington, same thing (minus the 3-4), they need a DE to disrupt the passing game. That's why I have a gut feeling that Spears will fall, because most teams will want their first round DE to be a pass rushing force, and that's just not the type of player that Spears is.

Subject: Packers First Round Selection
DraftKing-
I enjoy your site very much and most of your picks make logical sense. I understand that not everyone knows as much about the Packers as us crazed cheeseheads, but come on; Charlie Frye?????? First of all, Frye is NOT first round material. Second of all why would the Packers spend ANY of their first three picks on him (one first and two seconds)???. The Packers currently have two young QB's that are backing up Favre and both of them show promise. More importantly, with the Packers cap situation, why would they want to pay two quarterbacks starter money when Frye would be sitting on the bench for two years anyway?? Finally, the Packers entire defense guard and tight end is of much more importance than a third string quarterback. Every player that you have going after the 24th pick would make more sense for the Packers than Frye. Additional players like Ruud, Thurman, Bullocks, Ware, Hawthorne, --heck even Matt Jones-- would be a better fit for the Pack despite their non first round grade. But hey, if you have Frye in the first, those players would deserve to as well--even more so since they would fill need positions.
Lou: I knew this one was coming. I picked up on a rumor last week that Green Bay was interested in Frye. Of course, "rumors" that come out before the draft are often a huff-and-puff show, with swerves and misdirections designed to obscure the true intentions of a particular team. They'd only take Frye there since he very likely wouldn't be around by the time Green Bay picks for the first time in round two.
But your point about the Packers being set already at QB is well taken. However, with that list of players you gave, I got to thinking about what would happen if Green Bay "shocked the world" and took Matt Jones at #24 to play WR. Sure, Green Bay is set at the position already, but any football fan would have to be intrigued by the thought of Favre-to-Jones. Let Favre heave it up there (and even at his age, Favre still has a cannon for an arm) and let the 6'6" Jones go get it.
No, that won't happen, and in all likelihood Green Bay will go defense in round one. But maybe I'll have to do some editing when Madden 2006 comes out to make it happen, if only in a video game...
