Oregon's aspirations to win the BCS Title ended tonight with an upset loss to Arizona. Oregon came out to a blistering start, with the opening drive capped by a very impressive 39 yard touchdown run by Heisman hopeful QB Dennis Dixon.
Unfortunately for Oregon fans (and for fans of high-level football performances), Dixon re-injured the left knee that he sprained in Oregon's win over Arizona State on November 3, 2007, collapsing to the turf untouched in a disturbing moment on live television. Dixon was wearing a brace on his left knee that may have prevented a more severe injury, though as of this writing, it's unknown what Dixon's status will be for the rest of the season.
One player whose status went up was Arizona CB Antoine Cason, who at one point looked like a potential first round pick in the 2007 Draft before opting to return to school for his senior year. As part of the struggling 5-6 Wildcats, he has been downgraded by some observers. But tonight he returned a punt for one TD and took back an interception for a second TD, and he made his presence felt in a major way.
Cason remains a borderline first/second round pick for the draft, and he has the look of a player who could slip into the early second round and potentially turn into a major performer. Teams often gameplan Arizona by throwing away from Cason, but he is currently third on the team in tackles and is a strong, physical presence on the field. Him going to a team like the Rams early in the second round would make a great deal of sense.
If Kansas beats Missouri, might we see LSU play the Big XII Championship Game winner (likely Kansas vs. Oklahoma) for the BCS Title? There have been so many upsets that I really don't know the value of looking ahead to the BCS Title game at even this point, and there is a team in Morgantown, WV that can certainly make a case for its slot in the game.
This weekend I'm heading to Little Rock to see Arkansas play Mississippi State. Felix Jones may not play due to a thigh bruise (which has left him "very, very sore" according to reports), but the chance to possibly see Jones along with top RB prospect Darren McFadden, as well as evaluate the status of intriguing 6'6" WR Marcus Monk (who is still not 100% in his recovery from two knee surgeries) should be great.
