Subject: Jamal Lewis/Adrian Peterson

Do you think the Browns' signing of Jamal Lewis means they're moving away from Peterson? I don't necessarily think so. Lewis has a lot of miles on him, hasn't played a full season in a few years (for injury reasons or otherwise) and only signed a one year deal. Obviously Droughns is gone but I think a Peterson-Lewis backfield could be pretty strong especially if the Browns upgrade the offensive line with other draft picks. I think Thomas will be gone at #2, Calvin Johnson isn't a need, and it's a bit early for Quinn so I think Peterson is the pick.

Lou: Reuben Droughns is expected to be traded soon, or otherwise cut, in part because of a roster bonus that he is due by mid-month (and also because he averaged just 3.4 yards per carry last year.) I don't think that this means the Browns won't take Peterson; the Colts and Bears both utilized two RB attacks last year, and in the copycat NFL, I imagine we'll see more teams get on that bandwagon.

Jamal Lewis is under only a one year contract, and he is one failed drug test away from a one year ban. Keep that in mind.

I do wonder if Cleveland might consider taking Calvin Johnson, though. Peterson is a great talent, but CJ is such a rarity with his combination of skills that I wonder if Cleveland might just decide to go CJ in round one and then take a RB in round two (where there should be some quality depth on the board.)

Subject: Just some thoughts

With Cleveland taking Lewis now, I am guessing Peterson will fall a little bit now. Will the browns go with Quinn now or with Johnson? As a Dallas fan why would they take Ginn, I see them get a receiver later. Look for them to take a safety, Ross or maybe Levi Brown if there. I mean I am no expert but Dallas feels good about Crayton and even some of the youngsters after him in depth chart. Surprise Pick of first round, Ginn goes to Skins. You read it here first.

Lou: The question with Peterson seems to be: if Cleveland does decide to pass on him, how far will he fall? Could the Bills luck into a massive steal with Peterson at #12?

At one point I had Ginn slated to Washington... and, strangely enough, no one complained about it. The Redskins like to make a big splash, and while their draft needs (with no picks after the #6 overall until round five) would make such a move very surprising... it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Dallas needs to develop a young, skilled WR, and while Ginn might not be the guy they end up with, I'd think that a young wideout could be brought along slowly in 2007; Terrell Owens turns 34 this year, and Terry Glenn will be 33 before the season starts, so an injection of youth sure seems like a good idea for the Cowboys.

Subject: CALVIN JOHNSON

I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I AM A BIG BUCCANEERS FAN AND I REALLY HAVE MY HEART SET ON US DRAFTING CALVIN JOHNSON AT THE #4 OVERALL PICK. HOW LIKELY IS IT, IN YOUR MIND, THAT WE WILL ACTUALLY HAVE A SHOT AT DRAFTING HIM. AND ALSO, WHO DO YOU THINK THE BUCS WILL TAKE IN THE 2ND AND 3RD ROUNDS OF THE DRAFT. JUST WANTED AN “EXPERT” OPINION.

Lou: Please don't e-mail in all caps. Please.

I think it's less than 50/50 on the Bucs even having a shot at CJ without trading up. Oakland at #1 looks ready to take a QB (note the team's unwillingness to promise Jeff Garcia that they wouldn't take a QB at that spot), but with Al Davis you never know. At #2 it would be comical to some degree for Detroit to take yet another first round WR, but Calvin Johnson is such a "can't miss" prospect that he could end up there, though with two returning 1,000+ yard receivers from 2006, that seems unlikely. Cleveland at #3 would seem in line to take Adrian Peterson, for reasons explained above, but they could end up snatching Calvin Johnson off the board.

Detroit trading down seems like a good possibility; I could see Arizona moving up to #2 to secure Joe Thomas. That would work out well for the Bucs, as Arizona doesn't look to be drafting CJ. But if another team strikes a deal with Detroit for that pick, it could change things considerably.

If the Bucs do take Johnson, I could see them targeting DE, safety, and LB in rounds two and three.
