Subject: Drew staton

We all know about brady quinn and jamarcus russell but what are your thoughts on drew staton and some of the other quarterback prospects that havent gotten as much press( troy smith, chris leak, jarod zabransky)

also as lamar woodely and david harris have fallen what do you see as possible destinations for them outside of the first round

Your site is the best, keep up the good work.

Lou: Drew Stanton had an excellent showing at the Indianapolis combine, so much so that there are some who think, incredibly, that Stanton has actually moved in front of Brady Quinn in the QB pecking order. I don't think that myself, but at the very least Stanton's stock is on the rise (after falling during much of the 2006 season.)

Troy Smith was way overhyped during the year, but the pendulum swung the other way after the BCS Title game, where Smith (in my opinion) received an undue amount of criticism. Smith has the look of a second rounder; his height is going to be seen as a problem, but the success of Drew Brees has created a quick counter-point that will have to be taken into consideration. Smith's success on the college level was impressive, and the guy is a winner. If he goes high in round two, that would seem to me to be about right. Any lower than that and he falls into the "great value" category.

Chris Leak didn't have a particularly good Senior Bowl, and he is going to need to have some good private workouts to boost his stock. Jarod Zabransky is quick, but he has many QBs ahead of him, from Tyler Palko to Kevin Kolb. He looks like a day two pick.

Lamar Woodley is a bit undersized, and he seems like a better fit for a 3-4 OLB spot. He has a nose for finding the QB, and in the right situation he could be a great fit. I could see a 3-4 team taking a shot on him in round two.

The other Michigan player you mentioned, David Harris, also seems to be best suited for a 3-4 at ILB. If he falls in round two, and if New England isn't satisfied with its ILB prospects at that point, he could end up as a Patriot.

Subject: Jaguars updates

Since I last wrote you (check your December 26 mailbag), here are some updates for the Jaguars.

1. JDR announced at the combine this week that Byron Leftwich will be the team's starter in 2007. (GREAT move)

2. FS Deon Grant, as of this writing, has not been re-signed.

3. LB Darryl Smith was signed to an extension through 2012.

4. The team announced yesterday (may be a smokescreen) that they will NOT draft a WR in the first round, and are looking for defense. Speculation is the Jaguars will target WR Kevin Curtis in free agency.

That said, I still don't see the Jaguars drafting CB in the first.

If Reggie Nelson is there at 17, I see the Jaguars jumping all over him there. I can also see DE being a target there, too.

If you decide to do a round 2 mock, I could see LSU WR Dwayne Bowe as a Jaguars possibility.

Lou: Thanks for the info. The situation with the Jaguars and Byron Leftwich has been strange. I'm a Leftwich fan, dating back to his days at Marshall (you have to have lived in Huntington to truly appreciate what that university means to the town; it's a relationship unlike any other I've ever seen), and I still think he can be a strong NFL QB.

The Jaguars shouldn't take a first round WR, not with the talent they already have on the team at that position. And I don't see CB being a target spot there, either. I doubt that Dwayne Bowe will fall to round two, even with him "only" running a 4.51 40 at the combine.

Keeping Daryl Smith at MLB was smart by Jacksonville, but OLB still has to be a consideration. I'm not sure how much of a priority DE will be, not with Bobby McCray coming off of a 10 sack season. I'd think that the Jaguars will do their best to work out a long-term deal with him (he's a restricted free agent right now.)

The Jaguars targeting the best of OL, safety, and OLB for that #17 spot makes the most sense to me. I'd tend to think that they wouldn't have a shot at LaRon Landry or Reggie Nelson, but if one of them falls, they'd sure make a nice addition to the Jaguars secondary.

Subject: Cowboys

I always see on your page that you have the Cowboys drafting Justin Blalock. On several websites the Boys seem to be showing strong interest in Leonard Davis of the Cardinals. If they sign him where do you think that they go in the draft? Personally, I want a reciever to develop behind Glenn and Owens because I don't feel that Crayton is a top flight player. Thank, I always enjoy your site, you're a very smart football man.

Lou: Free agency is going to cause widespread changes in mock drafts, as it always does, with teams addressing obvious needs with available players. The Cowboys can't officially say anything about Leonard Davis, though behind-the-scenes, who knows. Davis will command some decent money on the open market, and perhaps Dallas will be his destination.

The idea with Justin Blalock going to Dallas is more because of his versatility and ability to fill multiple offensive line spots than anything. He's not prototype offensive tackle height, but he is strong (40 reps of 225 pounds at the combine) and will be a nice addition to whatever team drafts him.

Dallas could very easily take a WR, and that is a distinct possibility with age creeping up on Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens. It's much more likely now than it would have been had Bill Parcells returned for one more year.
