Love the site and have been coming to it for a long while now. My one issue with your 2008 projection is that you keep having the Lions taking a RB. Kevin Jones has come on strong in his return from the injury. He does seem to get injured a lot but I like him as our featured back. We do need a good backup and I think we will re-sign TJ Duckett after this season. I think those two can handle the load for a few more seasons. While I wouldn't mind adding another weapon to our offense I think there are more pressing needs. The secondary has come up with turnovers but if we don't get at least one CB this offseason I will be shocked. Also, we need a MLB and possibly a new OLB with Boss Bailey a free agent after the season. Alex Lewis could step in but he is hurt a lot too. I really really hope that we go defense in the first round and if not it had better be an o-line pick. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Lou: The long-term nature of Kevin Jones' Lisfranc injury (in his left foot) was disconcerting; that's the same injury that ended the career of Errict Rhett. But, now that Jones has returned and proven that he has regained NFL quality form, things may change as far as the Lions and their 2008 draft considerations.
Jones has one year left on his deal after this season, with a base salary of just $545,000, and perhaps the Lions will opt to attempt re-signing T.J. Duckett and use that combination at RB next year. Moreover, with former Wisconsin standout RB Brian Calhoun potentially being 100% healthy in 2008, the Lions should have several options at the running back position.
As it is, Tatum Bell looks like the odd man out there now due to the depth of Jones and Duckett, and perhaps the Lions would rather use a first round pick on defense than further crowding the backfield.
You raise a valid point about Boss Bailey, who will be an unrestricted free agent. I could see Detroit going corner or LB, particularly when you consider how much linebacker talent will likely be available in the draft. The Lions are 30 out of 32 in passing yards given up (258 ypg), and bringing in a blue chip secondary player would be quite sensible.
