Before I start, my deepest sympathies go to the friends and family of Sean Taylor and everyone in the Washington Redskins organization and in the NFL. Here's hoping that he manages to pull through and recover from the senseless attack he suffered in the early morning hours of today.

Subject: chambers chargers and the draft
a few notes, Chambers was a great deal in football sense for both teams, while a second round pick Might start for the chargers, he will certainly start for the dolphins, they will save cash, and get youth on the same page after they draft Matt Ryan this year, I expect them to deal 1 if not both D studs in the off season, either to a NFC team who is close or to the RAIDERS, as they like over the hill high end contracts.
Miami will be back in about 2 years to the playoffs, if BUFFALO and jets stumble maybe sooner.
Chargers Need a S-RT-ILB who covers and tackles, and a DT who is Big and a run stuffer, They may look to get into mcnabb sweepstakes, I will know first hand by jan10!
I expect 1 big FA and the rest to come through the draft, they owe SD and will now spend, LOOK out next year, And NE will have cap issues when they win SB,
as for COACH, I expect 1 and out in the playoffs and the MAD greek will awaken, and FIRE everyone in the main office, PLEED with jimmy johnson, bill cohwer and pete carroll, and then make a hire. Personally RYAN from baltimore makes the most sense, and garrett as BOTH HC....dual roles!
draft, most interesting thing to me is Dallas, they just need depth and they are built to last, and with 3 picks in top 60 look good for next 4 years already, add in a S-CB-WR-T and they are runnning.
Lou: The Chargers trading for Chris Chambers made sense for both sides, I agree. The Chargers have a lineup that went 14-2 last year that lost very little from that squad, but the team was plagued with injury at the WR spot. Enter a solid veteran WR and, voila, the need was filled.
Miami wasn't going anywhere at the time the trade was made, and it allowed them to play their young wideouts and evaluate them without worrying about hurting Chambers' ego.
With San Diego trading up to get speedy Utah safety Eric Weddle in the 2007 Draft, I'd think that safety would not be a target spot for round one. An upgrade at right OT to compliment the excellent Marcus McNeill would be nice, but isn't a huge demand. LB (particular ILB) makes probably the most sense for that first round pick, along with the option of trading out of the first round, and if they keep the pick there should be some good talent on the board for the Chargers.
One and done for Norv Turner? We'll see. Jimmy Johnson has a great gig at FOX (where he is underrated and does a solid job) and only has to work part-time, commuting to-and-from New York from his Florida home (thankfully FOX ditched the travelling pre-game show for 2007.) I suspect that Bill Cowher would likely be more inclined to go for the Carolina job if John Fox exits after this year due to Cowher having a home in Charlotte. And, in my opinion, Pete Carroll would be foolish to leave his great gig at USC.
But the NFL is a business, and if the Chargers miss the playoffs after a 14 win season, a change may come.
The big challenge for the Patriots is going to be retaining Randy Moss, but that's a problem to be dealt with after the season. Their key guys are, for the most part, under contract, and while Asanti Samuel is going to hit free agency this off-season, the Pats have proven to be great at finding players who fit their system.
With the Dolphins using a second rounder on John Beck in the most recent draft, I would be floored if they drafted Matt Ryan. You never know in the NFL, but that would be shocking to me. The Dolphins will need to make a number of upgrades, and you're right that with three of the top 60 picks they can land some blue-chip talent, but it will take some savvy personnel moves to make it happen.
It's not like there's a giant chasm between Miami and the rest of the NFL; remember, the Dolphins were 9-7 in 2005 and 6-10 in 2006, so they have had at least moderate success in recent years. And, in the era of free agency, by making the right free agent moves, a team can move into competitive shape relatively quickly.
