hey draft king.. can you explain to me WTF Miami was thinking when they traded Chris Chambers?

Lou: It's pretty simple: the Dolphins are 0-6, and at this point the best thing for them to do is to put themselves in a position to win in the future. The Dolphins would have had to pay 29-year-old Chris Chambers some big money over the next few years had they not traded him.

Chambers' base salary
2007: $5,400,000
2008: $5,100,000
2009: $4,550,000

The Dolphins made the move, finances aside, ostensibly to allow more playing time for Ted Ginn, Jr. (22 years old) and Derek Hagan (23 years old) alongside Marty Booker. Moreover, Miami gains San Diego's 2008 second round pick with the deal. Chambers hasn't scored a TD in 14 games, and apparently the Dolphins felt the draft pick was worth acquiring.

The Dolphins have lacked a full compliment of day one picks in recent years, in part because of the Ricky Williams trade (which ultimately cost them two first rounders), but also because of moves like trading their 2005 second rounder to Philly for A.J. Feeley, a move that looked highly questionable at the time and was utterly foolish in hindsight, particularly with how high the pick ended up being (#35 overall).

For San Diego, the logic is simple, as their top WR Eric Parker is going to be out longer than expected due to a broken toe. The team's embarrassing 1-3 start has been righted (for now) with the team now at .500, but the Chargers aren't taking any chances.

11. New England Patriots (from San Francisco) - Dan Connor, LB, Penn State
Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel will be free agents after this year, and a versatile LB like Dan Connor would be a great fit with an already stacked Patriots defense. Corner may be a consideration as well, though this would probably be too high of a spot to justify taking a corner.

Bruschi will be a FA after this year--as will Junior Seau--but Vrabel is signed through '09.

Lou: You're right that Vrabel is not approaching free agency; I found a list that had him listed as a free agent to-be, but that was inaccurate. If the Pats keep the 32-year-old Vrabel, he will make $2.8 million in 2008 (with $1 million as a roster bonus) and $3.2 million (including another $1 million roster bonus) in 2009.

But any way you slice it, the Pats could use a young, high-end linebacker talent. Adalius Thomas is 30, and while he was a nice pickup, he didn't help tip the scale toward the young side.
