Subject: Adam Carriker
Hello. I am following up on our recent email conversation re Carriker and the Jets. There is no way the Jets will take Bush if Carriker is there. The Jets brain trust, Mangini and Tannenbaum, are disciples of Bill Parcells, a notorious believer in smaller backs. He is known to believe that bigger backs (Christian Okoye being the exception) break down and dont have long careers. The Jets will not draft a big back in the first round.
The Jets will build from the lines out. Last year they worked on the offensive line. This year, if the talent is there the Jets will try to rebuild its defensive line. Carriker is just too perfect fro the Jets to pass him up. Anyway, it looks like he wont be there at #25.
Lou: What the Jets opt to do in free agency should go a long way toward indication what their first round pick direction will be. Carriker is ideal for a 3-4 defense, but it's not as if Shaun Ellis and Bryan Thomas were terrible at defensive end last year.
You make a valid point about the Parcells smaller RB philosophy, though Ottis Anderson fit in well with Parcells' Giants during their second Super Bowl run and he was 6'2" 220. Of course, Anderson was a different situation in that he made a comeback after injuries ended his run with the St. Louis Cardinals (versus being a fresh back taken in the draft), and he ultimately lost his job the next year to the smaller Rodney Hampton.
The Jets need more than just Leon Washington at RB, but if smaller RBs are the direction they'd look, maybe that is the spot where Kenny Irons will go. Not to be overlooked is the team's need at corner, which could be where the Jets look in round one. We shall see...

Subject: Ginn/Smith?
Any chance a team grabs Ted Ginn Jr. in round one and Troy Smith in round two?
Lou: It could happen. The odds are against it, but sometimes teammates do end up going in the same draft, as Jacksonville did with Marcedes Lewis and Maurice Jones-Drew (both from UCLA) in rounds one and two of last year's draft.
It would need to be a team with need at both WR and QB drafting toward the middle of the draft, but there aren't that many teams with pressing needs at both positions outside of Oakland, which at #1 won't take either of those guys (unless the Raiders shock the world and take Adrian Peterson #1, have Ginn fall to them at the top of round two, *and* have Troy Smith fall to them at the top of round three.) Carolina is a possibility, though I would doubt that they would take Ginn in round one.

Subject: Possible Trade?
I keep on reading where the Buccaneers are interested in trading out of their 1st round spot? Do you think Houston would try and trade up in an effort to lock up Adrian Peterson so that someone like Cleveland doesn't try and snatch him since it would have to fall perfectly for the Texans to draft him? Also, what else would they probably have to forfeit to get him?
Lou: I've heard talk of a possible Detroit/Tampa Bay trade where Simeon Rice (who turns 33 this off-season) would be shipped to the Lions in exchange for one of the Detroit DTs (Shaun Rogers, Cory Redding, or Shaun Cody) and other considerations. As for Tampa Bay's #3 or #4 pick (coin flip pending), I've heard no rumblings about any deal there. It's hard to trade out of the top five, and if the Bucs trade Rice, I could see them potentially taking a DE toward the top.
Then again, the Bucs are $24 million under the salary cap, and they could acquire a defensive end via free agency and instead use that high pick on a playmaker like Calvin Johnson.
I don't think Houston will be trading up with Cleveland, as trading into or out of the top five is very difficult. I figure the Texans will hope Peterson falls to them, and if not then take a major playmaker like LaRon Landry. Houston trading up to Washington at #6 is not an unreasonable possibility.

Subject: Kevin Kolb
Thanks Lou for the previous response. You have a great site going here. I have a question about Kevin Kolb, there conflicting rumors swirling around about him. He could be the possible #3 quarterback in the draft...or he could slip all the way until the third or fourth round. Where do you think he goes? Is there a possibility he stays in Houston and joins the Texans?
Lou: Kevin Kolb looks to be a 3rd/4th round pick, possibly making a play for the second round if he has a good combine. I think Troy Smith will still go before him (but wow, Smith's stock dropped like no other after the BCS Title game), and Kolb will likely be in the running with the likes of Drew Stanton, Jordan Palmer, Tyler Palko, etc. to be the fourth QB to go.
