Subject: steelers

hi...ok...heres the question:
who do you see the steelers taking to replace the aspect of randel el in their offense? im thinking they go for michael robinson out of penn state...any ideas of who is a good pick to be their next slash? im also thinking that they go for white at rb. if they could fill those 2 holes at receiver and power back, i see them being an even more complete football team this coming year.

Lou: Michael Robinson is a possibility for Pittsburgh. I still like the idea of the Steelers going with Sinorice Moss at the #32 spot, but if they go LB, S or interior OL there, a WR in rounds two or three would seem like a distinct possibility, with someone like Robinson being an option.

It doesn't *have* to be a slash type WR just because they lost Antwan Randle-El to free agency. A guy with speed makes sense for many reasons, but it doesn't mean that Pittsburgh can't go for height with its WR pickup.

As for the running back position, the draft isn't much for the power back types near the top. Perhaps they can pick up someone later on down the line who fills that role, but the thought of drafting LenDale White at #32 has "buyer beware" written all over it. With Staley and Parker in the backfield, they should be fine for the 2006 season. A power back would just be gravy.

One thing to keep in mind is that Parker is technically not yet signed for 2006, but because he has only played two years of NFL ball, his rights still belong to Pittsburgh. He won't even be eligible to be a restricted free agent until this time next year, but right now his agent is talking with the Steelers about a multi-year deal.

Here's my problem with your prognostication that the steelers will go WR (moss specifically) in the first round. Unless jackson or holmes some how fall to them (or they trade up) any WR they pick is most likely going to end up as a 3rd WR at best (they're really high on walter young and nate washington, so this isn't a sure bet). Even with moss's punt return ability, i just don't see them getting first round value out of a guy who will more than likely be burried on the depth chart. I know it sounds rather hypocritical to say this, becuase most likely anyone they pick will end up as a second stringer at best due to the limited number of holes they're looking to fill, but i feel there's better value at other positions. Free safety and LB seem to be the most likely targets, as there should be a number of players available with their pick that would provide valuable depth at these important positions.

Lou: It would make sense for the Steelers to add depth at FS and LB. It all depends on what value Pittsburgh puts on Moss relative to the free safeties and outside LBs who will still be on the board at pick #32. Since this is such a deep draft at OLB, they could go with that position and not surprise me at all. As I mentioned above, don't discount the possibility that the Steelers might go interior OL. My guess would be that they'll narrow it down to a few key positions (WR, FS, OLB, OG, C) and then go with who they feel is the best player available on the board among those spots. There's always an outside chance that they might go CB, but that would likely be a CB/S "tweener" type player that would be groomed for the FS spot. And remember, speedy DEs can project to OLB in a 3-4, so the Steelers braintrust could be mulling through those options as well.
