Subject: JETS CANT LEAVE THE DRAFT WITHOUT A BIG NAME

As a jets fan, its figures we get the 4th pick because of our final win in a 3 player draft as far as franchise players go. With the compensation from Edwards, I think the Jets HAVE TO get one of the 3 being Leinart, Young, or Bush. Not only will there be pressure from media and fans, but they need a face for this franchise. I know you have commented previously about the cap situation but that's why GM's are GM's and Owners are Owners. If it comes down to it, I really think the Jets will work there way into the top 3. Even if it means a NY Knicks like cap move.

Lou: The NFL doesn't work like the NBA with salary caps. You can't cut Mark Blount to save part of his bloated salary; if you're the Celtics, you find an easy mark (like, say, the Timberwolves) to take that contract. In the NFL, the money is paid up front in signing bonuses, and the contracts themselves aren't guaranteed (with rare exceptions.) The 49ers suffered for years for the hit they took for cutting Jeff Garcia. So it's not exactly a simple equation for the Jets.

Moreover, with a top five pick, the signing bonus is typically huge. I say the Jets move from the four spot, but it's not to trade up -- it's to move down. New York has many holes to fill, and multiple picks instead of one high priced rookie would be preferable. And with a talent like DE Mario Williams likely to be on the board at the #4 spot, it's not like the Jets won't have potential trade partners.

hey what is the chances that Detroit could trade there 9th pick for Denvers first two picks in the first round. maybe the 9th pick and charles rogers for there picks where ever they maybe. we could get a corner and ot in the first.. by the way love your site...

Lou: Hmm, a #9 for a #22 and a #28. 1,350 (from Detroit) for 780 and 660 (from Denver) totalling 1,440, if you believe the pick value chart from NFL.com. Have Detroit throw in a fourth rounder and it could happen. If OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson is really on the board at #9, I could see Denver going for it. You might be onto something there.

Subject: Titans & top of the draft

Draft King-

I enjoy your site. However, I have some comments regarding the top of your draft board. In your January 6th mailbag, you mentioned that you expect the Titans to take whoever's left over at #3 of Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, or Vince Young. You mentioned the Leinart/Chow connection, but equally as important (if not more) is Steve "Air" McNair's connection to Vince Young. McNair has mentored Young for years, from Young's high school days at McNair's QB camp in Mississippi up to the present day where McNair was on the sidelines at the 2006 Rose Bowl as Young's guest. On top of their special bond, Young would be the ideal successor to McNair, as his skills have the potential to be a superset of McNair's.
Two comments: when was the last time college teammates were taken 1-2 in the NFL draft? This is highly likely to happen this year with Bush and Leinart. Also, do you feel that the top 3 guys in this year's draft pool are all #1 overall draft pick caliber? I'd bet the 49ers would love to trade Alex Smith straight-up for any of those three today.

Lou: After the way Chris Chandler was so cold to Steve McNair when McNair entered the league with the Houston Oilers, it would be pretty nice to see McNair pass the torch to Vince Young under very different circumstances.

The last time college teammates went 1-2 in the draft was in 2000. The Cleveland Browns took DE Courtney Brown #1 overall, and the Washington Redskins took LB LaVar Arrington at #2. Brown and Arrington both attended Penn State. And I'm proud to say I knew that without having to look it up.

I do feel that Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and Vince Young are all #1 overall calibre. Had Leinart come out last season, he would've gone #1 overall to San Francisco. Young certainly has #1 overall potential. In other words, the top of this draft looks very strong.

Subject: Pats

Hey Lou, i know the pats just signed Corey Dillion to a new deal last offseason to keep him there for a while, but he is getting older and starting to slow down. Do you see them using their late first round pick on a "Corey Dillion type" running back for the future, oh lets say Lendale White out of USC. He seems to be a "Belichick" guy who comes from a great program and knows what it is like to win. I know the Pats have other holes they NEED to fill such as linebacker or (like every year) the secondary. Maybe a Darnell Bing or maybe Michael Huff if he slides. I would love to see Lendale in a patriots uniform and what he could bring to the team with his speed and power. What do you see them doing?

Lou: The Patriots could go any number of ways. Defensive secondary is a direction the team could take, though with Rodney Harrison returning from injury next season, he'll make everyone around him look better.
