Subject: Niners Take a RB?
Is there any chance the 49ers make a trade with Texas for the first pick?
Its no secret that the Texans NEED an o-line in this draft, and that Bush
will only help them win after they get an o-line. With Vince Young probably
going third now, its a good bet that D'Brickashaw Ferguson would fall to
pick #6 or #7, and David Carr must be begging for Houston management to
trade down and take him. After all, it makes sense that, if Houston is going
to commit to Carr, wouldn't they commit to giving him what he needs to win?
And what would the Niners need to trade away for that pick (if I'm correct,
they have a couple extra 3rd or 4th round picks coming to them because of
the Rattay/Winborn trades)?
I really don't believe Kevan Barlow is the future at RB for them, regardless
of what he says, and I think they can address DE and WR in the free agency
market (Reggie Wayne and Darren Howard are available). I would like to see
them trade Barlow and trade for Bush to team up with Frank Gore for a
similar outside-inside combo seen at USC. If they can't trade for Bush, or
perhaps don't want to trade away too many picks, do they get DeAngelo
Williams at #6 or #7? The only early pick I disagree with in your mock is
the Jets taking DeAngelo. Curtis Martin has a year or two left, and I think
John Abraham burned a lot of bridges by sitting out of the playoffs last
year. I look for them to take Mario Williams and look at Marshawn Lynch next
year. What will the Niners do concerning Bush or DeAngelo Williams?
Lou: Considering that San Francisco would be trading from outside of the Top 5 to get the #1 overall pick, I don't see a deal with the 49ers and the Texans happening. If San Francisco really sees RB as a huge need, the team could take LenDale White in the first round, but I see the 49ers taking an elite DE instead of that. More likely is the 49ers trading down to get multiple players, including a RB like perhaps Laurence Maroney.
Another option for San Francisco is to go for a player like RB Brian Calhoun from Wisconsin in a later round. You don't necessarily have to break the bank to get a quality RB. And don't forget that Edgerrin James will very likely be a free agent...

Subject: Lions 2006 Draft Picks
This year was a rough year for me, I live in Michigan so I cheer for the
Lions, but deep down i'm kind of a Packers (mostly Brett Favre) fan, so to
see both teams do as poorly as they did made it difficult at times to
maintain my devotion to either club. Almost every mock draft I have looked
at has the lions taking either an OT or Jimmy Williams the CB from Virginia
Tech with the #9 pick. My question is, since I haven't seen Jimmy Williams
play at all, what makes Williams a better pick than a guy like Michael Huff
from Texas, who the Rose Bowl announcers spent the entire half of the game
that Vince Young wasn't dominating talking about how fast Huff is and how
well he tackles?
Also do you see a team like the Lions taking a "Denver" chance (Maurice
Clarett) on a guy like Marcus Vick, and drafting him higher than most teams
would because we Lions fans are desperate for a QB whose last name isn't
Harrington? Or do you think Millen the Villian will wait another year?
Lou: I think Marcus Vick is an amazing talent. He's been unlucky (getting caught doing things that many, many college students do), and he's made some bad decisions (I can't defend the weapons charge), but remember that going into the Virginia Tech/Miami game that there were some considering Marcus for Heisman contention. Plus, he's only 22. Let's not close the door on him just yet.
But that weapons charge... it's not good. No one wants to draft a player knowing that he could potentially spend a year in jail. Look at how four months in jail completely threw off Jamal Lewis' 2005 season. Will someone take a flier on Marcus Vick? Sure. And it might be the Lions. But I don't anticipate anyone making a move on him on day one (where Clarett went, albeit at the very end of the first day.)
Too many in the media have been all too ready to bury Marcus Vick, nevermind the near-impossible pressure that he faced playing QB at Virginia Tech as the brother of Michael Vick. But I'll tell you this: in the right environment (i.e. disciplinarian coach) I could see him thriving on down the line in the NFL. He's far from ready from starting in the NFL, but his talent level is just too high to be ignored.

Subject: Browns 06 draft
Hi Lou,
It's that time of year again and draft projections are in full swing. I choose no other site then yours to find out the latest trade rumors, updates, projections and just down right the best incite on teams. I wrote you last year and wanted Braylon and that came true so, with the browns picking 12th I have a few ideas I'll run past you. I like Cleveland to trade up and either land A.J. Hawk (LB) or, Demario Williams (DE) in a trade up. Do you see either of these happening? Also, if, they sit at 12 I like them to get C. Greenway or, possibly the best playmaker available either defense or offense. Who do you think that would be at that point? I love your site and hope to hear back from you.
A fan of draftking,
Matt Bash
Cleveland, Ohio.
Lou: Cleveland might move up a few spots, but I don't see them doing anything outrageous with trading up. There's really no need to do so. With the wide variety of DEs and OLBs in the draft, Cleveland can likely stand pat and get a high quality player in a need position at #12.
One crazy situation to consider is Cleveland moving up to #9 if D'Brickashaw Ferguson really falls that far. The Browns haven't been strong at offensive tackle since the franchise re-entered the NFL, and Ferguson would sure change that for them.

Subject: jets draft
LOU, I AGREE TRADING UP OR DRAFTING A QB WITH THE FIRST PICK IS NOT HAPPENING...SALARY CAP ISSUES..HOWEVER, UNLESS THE JETS TRADE DOWN, WHICH I BELIEVE IS A CONSIDERATION, I CANNOT SEE THEM DRAFTING A RB OVER THE LT FERGUSON OF VIRGINIA...TERRY BRADWAY CANNOT AFFORD TO MISS WITH THIS PICK, AND CHAD NEEDS ALL THE PROTECTION HE CAN GET...DON'T FORGET, THE JETS HAVE 68 MILLION INVESTED IN HIM, SO DRAFTING AN ELITE LT MAKES SENSE....THANKS, JOHN
Lou: It is entirely possible that the Jets could take Ferguson. But with a serious salary cap crunch arriving, the Jets have to do something to make sure their RB situation is handled. They won't be able to retain Curtis Martin (unless Martin does something crazy, like agree to redo his deal for the veteran minimum), and with shoulder injury concerns high on QB Chad Pennington, the Jets must do something to ensure that they can have some sort of offensive spark in 2006. An elite RB could give them just that, which is why I think, if they keep the #4 pick, they'll take an RB, most likely DeAngelo Williams.
