Subject: Charger's draft
Hey Lou, I really like your pick for the Chargers at 12 with Williamson. I would love to get him because he could add the final piece to the Charger's offense that they have been missing. But, at 28 I don't think that they will go after Roth. He is a great player but he doesn't really fit into a 3-4 defense. I think that they really need to get another good pass rushing OLB. Leber is a pretty good LB but his more natural position in the 3-4 is ILB since he doesn't have great speed or pass rushing ability. They scheduled a visit with DeMarcus Ware and if he falls to 28 I believe they will draft him to help improve the pass rush. Other teams knew where the pass rush was coming from last year with Steve Foley. If they had Ware on the other side it could help disguise blitzes. You could argue that they already have Shaun Phillips but Foley is coming onto 30 and they could use depth. If he is gone then they may go after Darryl Blackstock. They also need a good DE that can help collapse the pocket and stuff the runs. If they draft Williamson and Ware then at 61 they could go after Chris Canty or Jonathan Babineaux. Canty has ideal size and experience in the 3-4 but has injury problems. Babineaux could stand to gain 10-15 pounds but I think he could be a pretty good 3-4 end. What would you think if the Chargers ended up drafting Williamson, Ware and either Babineaux or Canty? They could end up trading down if they don't like who falls to 12. I was thinking that they may be able to trade down with the Saints. Do you think it would be to much to ask for the 16th and 40th picks from the Saints for the 12th? They may still be able to get Williamson at 16. If he is drafted already they can still probably get Clayton or White. They may feel a need to draft an ILB at 40 also since both Edwards and Godfrey are over 30. I really like Robert McCune. He reminds me a lot of Al Wilson because of his pure speed. His knock is he is already 26 because of service with the National Guard. They may decide to go with local boy Kirk Morrison. He has a great feel for the game and great leadership qualities.
Lou: I'm not sure why New Orleans would want to move from #16 to #12, but if so that seems like a fair trade on the surface. But San Diego likely won't have that opportunity, and even if they did, I don't think it would be wise to roll the dice with Troy Williamson sliding four more spots.
Landing Williamson and Ware would be a nice duo for San Diego, landing two quality players and filling two big needs at the same time. If the Chargers get Ware, they'll need to have decided (at least preliminarily) if he'll play DE or OLB, as that should impact their pick at #61. Chris Canty is a bit risky given his history of injury problems, but more important for the Chargers is that they have an OLB and a DE and not two DEs. What would be a real home run is if San Diego could get Virginia OLB Darryl Blackstock at #61. That might be too much to hope for, but Blackstock is touted as someone who'd fit in great in a 3-4.
Luckily for San Diego, the way they're positioned they should be able to have a WR and two solid defensive front seven players (DE/OLB) by the time the second round is over. If not, it should mean that a really good value player has dropped, and in that case you take that and run. Unless it's a QB... don't take a QB.
