Subject: Redskins--trade down?

Lou,

I've been a Skins fan since 1962, and they break my heart each draft when, no matter who's in charge, or how little it makes sense, they trade away picks for dubious (or sometimes fair) value. I've always had the theory that any manner of player acquisition is somewhat of an educated guess, since veterans may have hidden injuries, or, don't always play well in the new system, or, only played hard in their contract year, etc. and rookies are a guessing game, too. But since rookies come cheaper, and usually are in better shape, and can be coached into the team's system, I believe that teams should add to their alloted 7 picks so as to better the odds of getting value.

I recently wrote Coach Gibbs a letter, copy attached, with my ideas(he does read fan mail, I've received 3 handwritten notes from him thanking me).

Nevertheless, in this draft where the top talent is thin, and there's a lot of guessing as to the order of the available draftees, why shouldn't the Skins do a trade-down from No. 9 to, say, the middle of the round to pick up a 2d rounder, or include their WR Gardner in the deal to sweeten it up? Right now they only have 5 picks, with no 2d rounder.

What teams might the Skins partner up with in a deal like that?

Lou: You sure gave Coach Gibbs a great deal to think about in your letter. I imagine that the Redskins, like most NFL teams, receive a great deal of unsolicited advice when draft time rolls around, but hopefully he'll pay attention to what you said, since it made sense.

Trading down from #9 would be an option, but it should only be considered as a mid-draft move, unless Washington is down on the "elite" choices at DE and CB. The elite WRs will surely be gone (and I'm talking Mike Williams and Braylon Edwards here) at #9, and I suspect that the big two CBs (Pac-Man Jones and Antrel Rolle) will be off the board as well. But there is a chance that Jones or Rolle might be there, so Washington should hold off on any deals to see if one of them falls to that spot.

If that doesn't work, then trading down would be wise. You asked about teams that could be trading partners, and one might be the St. Louis Rams. By moving from #19 to #9, the Rams could leapfrog the Detroit Lions at #10 and take Alex Barron (if he's still on the board); St. Louis has three 3rd round picks and two 4th rounders (to go with a 1st and a 2nd). By moving down ten spots, the Redskins could potentially get at least two of those picks while at the same time still being in a position at #19 to get a spot to land a solid DE. In your letter to Coach Gibbs you singled out LSU DE Marcus Spears as a player you'd like Washington to land, and he very well might be there at #19. There are many other potential possibilities, though the other team that is loaded with picks, Philadelphia, is going to be unlikely in theory to work a deal with their NFC East rivals from DC.
