Haven't seen an update in a week. Are you working on a two round mock draft?

I'm thinking Miami is not going with the obvious running back - either Edwards or a QB if they can't trade down.

Lou: I've been playing catch-up today with my e-mail, so there should be plenty of new stuff in the mailbag for you to enjoy. As for the two-round mock, it's still in the works (complete with explainers), but it's not ready yet.

Miami could forego a RB at #2, but the only scenario I see that happening in is if they acquire Travis Henry. But doing that would cost them a draft pick, and new coach Nick Saban has already lamented in public about the lack of draft picks. This will give him something to fall back on if the Dolphins go 4-12 in 2005.

It would be very interesting if both Miami and Cleveland became involved in a bidding war to trade down with Minnesota. The problem for the Dolphins is that to win, they'd have to "lose" by likely receiving less than fair market value for the #2 overall pick. Moreover, the Dolphins are a team in need of many things, but the Dolphins *desperately* need a franchise RB. Luckily for Miami, at #2 overall they will have at least two of the three to choose from no matter what happens (barring injury), and likely they'll get first dibbs at whomever they want.

One thing that many people forget about the Ricky Williams trade with New Orleans is that Miami ended up giving up TWO first round picks: one in the initial deal, and the other because Williams ran for so many yards in his first season in Miami that it activated a clause in the deal that stipulated that New Orleans would receive Miami's first rounder the next season. Much like the Tampa Bay Bucs have learned, losing high draft picks like that can be crippling in the long run. And it's not much better for now for the Dolphins with the A.J. Feeley deal leaving them without a second rounder.

The Dolphins are hoping to get a second round pick by trading Patrick Surtain, but it looks like Kansas City will get him for a third or fourth rounder. Miami will need to address other positions with the three picks in the 3rd/4th round (assuming the Surtain trade goes through).

Drafting a QB would be a bad idea for Miami; this is not the time to use limited resources on a project pick. Braylon Edwards and Mike Williams are tempting prospects, but you have to fill a huge need with a huge pick. Miami is fortunate that RB is a position where rookies tend to shine more than any other, as whomever they choose there (presuming it's a RB) should be able to shine. And if the Dolphins think that Lamar Gordon (obtained from St. Louis last year) is the answer... well they'll be there up near the top of the draft in 2006 as well.
