Subject: Cowboys
Lou I noticed you changed the boys 20th pick back to Williamson again from Clayton any reason y? So because of what we have done in FA how do you think that changes our drafting probability. Also myself and a bunch of other cowboys fans feel like we need to be going after Darren Sharper to fill our FS need. Do you agree and if so have you heard any rumors of the possibility of Sharper coming to play for us!!! We also need to fill a LB position too I think Hartwell would be a great pickup!!! I think that if we land someone like Sharper and/or grab someone like hartwell than we can focus on drafting the best player avaliable rather than drafting out of need!! If we land Sharper than I could see a good draft senario of 11th- Derrick Johnson(if there)/Merriman trade the 20th pick and get someone like Brodney Pool, Marlin Jackson, or Shazor along with a WR in the 2nd rd!!!
Lou: Troy Williamson would be a steal at #20 in my opinion, and if he falls to that spot and the Cowboys keep the pick, he would be an excellent addition to the WR corps. While Mark Clayton is an outstanding WR prospect in his own right, Williamson has that special something to go with his size that makes him have the potential to someday be a primary receiver in the NFL. That warrants selection over Clayton, in my opinion.
Edgerton Hartwell would be a nice pickup at LB, but again I wonder if the asking price of LBs like him, Kendrell Bell (who signed with Kansas City), etc. is too much for the price-conscious Bill Parcells. The talk today is that Hartwell is contemplating an offer from the Miami Dolphins. He had wanted to go to Arizona, but with the Cardinals having already signed four free agents, financially things weren't lining up between him and that ballclub.
Derrick Johnson at #11 is a highly unlikely scenario, but Shawne Merriman is a distinct possibility. Then again, you have to look at Merriman as either a DE or a OLB -- not both. You can't clone him or anything. Perhaps the Cowboys will bide their time in the free agent market and hope to obtain the services of a lower priced LB who might be a bit more desperate to sign as the NFL Draft draws nearer.
It will be interesting to see what the Cowboys could get for the #20 pick. Last year the following trades happened in the vicinity of where the Cowboys have that selection:
#16 for #28 and #58
#19 for #20 and #119 (fourth rounder)
#22 for #43 and #144 (fifth rounder) and Bills 2005 first rounder
#24 for #26 and #123 (fourth rounder)
#28 for #31 and #127 (fourth rounder)
Of course the trade involving the Bills' first rounder is the one Dallas pulled off... to get what turned into the #20 pick in the 2005 draft. It took trading down twelve spots to land a late second rounder (along with a late first rounder), but this is prime wheel-and-deal real estate (15-45) so there's no reason that the Cowboys couldn't work something out. The Eagles are hated division rivals, but they might be in the best spot of any team looking to trade up since they have Miami's high second round pick (thanks A.J. Feeley!) and might want to snag a particular DT. ILB Channing Crowder might be of interest as well, though to get him it might take shooting a bit higher than the #20 spot (like perhaps Minnesota at #18).
