Hey man, the Patriots lost Troy Brown and David Patten. So this is our WR's:
1. Deion Branch
2. David Givens (but could leave)
3. Bethel Johnson
4. P.K Sam
I am worried and I think a WR in round 1 is a huge need. Mark Clayton stock is on the rise and won't be there at pick 32 but do you think Reggie Brown would be a good fit at 32?
Lou: What the Patriots do at #32 will depend a great deal on what WRs are on the board at that spot. There should be some good LBs on the board even at the end of round two, so it's not going to be a big deal to wait until then to take one (and the Patriots are great at finding later-round gems). It really depends on Roddy White, who seems to be the "X factor" as far as where he'll go (from mid 1st to early 2nd). You'll hear arguments made for Chris Henry, but his "questionable behavior" probably won't sit well with the Pats, especially not when they're thinking of investing a first round pick in him.
Now it is possible that New England could go with someone like Georgia WR Fred Gibson, a player who looked destined for first round glory but who has seen his star fade in the past several months. But don't discount Gibson's ability, or the possibility that New England could take him there. You mentioned Gibson's UGA teammate Reggie Brown, who eclipsed Gibson in receiving yards this past season, but I personally give the edge to Gibson at this point.

Subject: Denver, again.....
What do you make of the signing of Ian Gold? Is this a true indication of the "supposed" coming of the 3-4 defense? I would like to get your thoughts on the trade of Gerrard Warren, dude seems like a career underachiever, but the man is in his contract year. Does this change the scope of our draft? Trevor Pryce is still a Bronco, is there much interest in him? I have heard that we would accept a 4th or 5th round pick for him, go figure, 6 time all pro, and that low of draft choice. It's too bad it is cap related. And last but not least, with Jeb Putzier signing an offer sheet with the Jets, do you see Denver getting aggresive and making a move for TE Heath Miller? And if not Miller, who's the next best TE on the board Dressen, Smith??????
Thanks,
P.S. David Terrell or Ike Hillard would be a fine compliment to WR core.
Lou: I think landing Gerard Warren for a fourth round pick is a nice pickup. While he has underachieved in Cleveland, the one thing that he did do well there was force sacks from the tackle position. In the 3-4 I'm not sure how much he'll be asked to do that, but the ability to collapse the pocket is always a nice trait to have.
With Ian Gold, he was overshadowed in Tampa by Derrick Brooks. But Gold was a solid player who should give an already strong LB corps in Denver some needed depth.
As for Trevor Pryce, he is much better suited for a 4-3 defense in the opinion of Denver management (as cited in the 2/15/2005 mailbag), and as you alluded to, his cap number is huge. The Broncos might see it as a wash if it can get a fourth rounder for Pryce (since they gave up a fourth round pick to get Warren).
It would make great sense for the Broncos to target Heath Miller, and the team might not have to trade up to get him. Since you wrote this e-mail, the Detroit Lions signed free agent TE Marcus Pollard. The Lions had seemed like the top contender besides Detroit to draft Miller (even though Mariucci's version of the west coast offense doesn't utilize the tight end as much as other varities), but Miller would be a great fit for Denver.
David Terrell or Ike Hilliard might make an interesting pickup at WR, though if their asking prices are too high Denver would be better off looking elsewhere. With Rod Smith, Ashley Lelie and Darius Watts, the team doesn't need to overspend to add another WR. But there's no disputing that they would make a nice addition if the price is right.
