Subject: Bears Draft

Hey Lou,
Any chance the Bears try to trade down one spot ala Cleveland & Detroit last year. I hear Tampa really likes Mike Williams to line up with Clayton. I realize that Detroit picked up a 2nd round choice last year, do you think the Bears could get at least a 2nd or 3rd round pick from Tampa? I really want to see Mike Williams playing for the Bears, but if the above scenario played out, I wouldn't mind taking Braylon Edwards with the 5th pick and leaving Minnesota at #7 without these two wideouts to replace Randy Moss. You never know, Minnesota might just allow their time to expire while drafting again and slip back to pick 9 or 10 to draft Troy Williamson.

Lou: I accidentally overlooked this e-mail before, but I think it's worth discussing.

The Bucs were very impressed with Mike Williams' pro day, from all indications. Williams is a local talent (he went to high school in Tampa), and it would be interesting to see if the Bucs would be willing to move up one spot to get him.

However, with the Bucs being in such desperate shape from a salary cap standpoint, the team can scarcely afford to spare draft picks to move up in the draft. Particularly with how many draft picks Tampa Bay relinquished to obtain Jon Gruden, the team lost out on developing a nucleus of young players, a sacrifice which has caught up with the franchise now. I don't anticipate the team doing anything further to give up picks.

It might be interesting to see the Bears take Edwards in the hopes of the Bucs in turn drafting Williams, thus sticking it to the Vikings. I doubt that Minnesota will allow the clock to run out on them, though it has happened before by accident to the Vikings. Rumor has it that the Vikings might trade a first rounder to New Orleans to obtain DE Darren Howard, who partnered along with DE Kenechi Udeze would make a really fierce combo on the ends. I'd imagine that the Vikings wouldn't want to part with the #7 pick in such a deal, but one never knows how things might play out.

I could actually see Minnesota potentially trading up mid-draft with the Bucs to secure Edwards or Williams. It could provide the Bucs with another second rounder (which they desperately need) while also giving a guarantee to the Vikings that they would get one of the top two guys in the draft.
